The majority of us like to live in a space that doesn't favour one specific style--totally modern spaces are fun, but are likely not practical for everyday living. Too far country may have you regretting that rooster border in a few years. Which is why, this month's trend, the modern farmhouse kitchen, is so great. The mix of natural elements like rustic beams, with more contemporary pieces like metal bar stools, creates an effortless balance of competing styles. Incorporating vintage furniture and accessories is also a key piece to this look--it makes the space feel "lived in." Personally, this is one of my favourite design trends, as I tend to gravitate towards both ends of this spectrum. I love the industrial, cool vibes of a large pendant, and can't help but love the time-worn feel of a large repurposed wood island.

Christmas in the Coach House

As promised in my Charlie Brown Christmas Tree post, I have included snaps of my own version of the mini tree. This year, I decided to keep things pretty simple in the Coach House. I wanted the smaller tree to feel quirky and imperfect { note: this makes it much easier to decorate ;) }. So, I forge ribbon and filler, and mixed more rustic elements with hits of silver and sparkle. I left lots of breathing room between ornaments to create a more minimal look. But really at the end of the day, your Christmas decor is about making you feel warm and fuzzy. The best ornaments are the ones that make you smile, and fill you with happy memories. If ever there was a time to "let go and have fun with it," Christmas is it!

A Black and Brass Bash

You never know when and where you will find your next inspired idea. As is my own lovely tradition of trying to Christmas shop for others and buying only things for myself, I fell head over heels for this dress. Brass and Black--I knew it had to be a theme for entertaining this holiday season. Without any obvious signs of Christmas decor, this vignette is perfect for both your Secret Santa Cocktail Party, as well as your New Years Eve Soiree.

1. I started by covering my buffet with a cream and gold table cloth, and layering in soft faux furs for texture and warmth.
2. I included a dramatic lacquered black mirror to stay within my black and brass theme.
3. Next, I added some larger elements--the two black lanterns and my Kate Spade party boxes, which were not only the perfect colour, but practical too (they hold my cocktail napkins, etc.).
4. Then I filled out the vignette with vintage brass candle sticks in various shapes and sizes. My favourite travel souvenirs (the two Eiffel tower statues) add character and are a great conversation starter.
5. Every party needs some mood lighting, and the star garland from Ikea was just the trick.
6. In the bar area, I re-used my chalkboard easel (see tutorial here) to add a festive message.
7. My co-ordinating straws and wine markers were the perfect accents, and my vintage mason jars always come in handy during parties.
8. My new dress, along with some fun brass and black accessories completed my holiday party look!

And since I mentioned shopping, make sure to check out my co-ordinating Christmas Wish List below!

Warm and cuddly, soft and textured, cable knit is an ideal fabric to surround yourself with--and good thing because it is everywhere this season. Soft throws and pillows add easy comfort and a sense of home to the space, while extra chunky knits can make a room more playful. A great way to add extra seating to a smaller room is by adding knitted poufs and foot stools. And don't shy away from using this fabric in your modern design--cable knit isn't just for the cottage anymore.
