Crushing On

This month, I am crushing on citrus fruit flower arrangements. I love the idea of mixing something unexpected, like oranges, into fresh flowers. The bright natural hue of oranges, and their leafy counterparts make them ideal for a surprising array of bouquets. Paired with bold pinks, oranges and corals, oranges can create a beautiful rustic-chic look. While they look classic and understated with white blooms and greenery. They are also an inexpensive way to fill in those empty gaps, and create dimension (they look amazing drooping over the edge of your vessel!). Pumpkin Flower Arrangements

After getting inspired, I convinced my cousins and sisters to try making pumpkin flower arrangements for our Thanksgiving centre pieces. We were genuinely amazed with the results, and how simple and fun it was to achieve them. The individual beauty of each one was so fun, and the possibilities are endless--imagine white pumpkins with dark purple peonies for Halloween!

List of Items Required: 

  • Small to medium sized pumpkins (ours came from Linton's Farm Market in Oshawa)
  • Plastic cup or tupperware to act as the vase inside the pumpkin
  • Carving knife
  • Sharp sheers or scissors
  • Marker to trace the cup
  • Flowers (ours came from Pineapple Street in Whitby and our own backyard)
  • Container to save your pumpkin seeds
  • Time: Roughly one hour

Trace the rim of the cup on your pumpkin so yo know how much to carve (the cup will hold your flowers).

Remove the guts and save those seeds (they make the perfect day-after snack).

After filling your cup with water and placing inside the pumpkin, pick your favourite flowers.

Trim your flowers as needed, making sure to remove any leaves that will be sitting in the water.

Terrariums

I recently enlisted the help of one of my oldest childhood friend's Emma, after I saw a photo of a terrarium she created. So she invited me up to her parent's home--a breathtakingly beautiful stone house in Orono--to help me make an indoor garden of my own. From the sangria, to the picture-perfect sunset and of course the great company, it was a beautiful way to spend a summer evening!

Choose your glass vessel (open-top for succulents), greenery, stones and any accessories.
We decided to use succulents versus plants.
We used cactus-specific soil, but you would need activated filter carbon if you were using plants.
The first layer should be rocks.
Next, we added moss.
Then add a thick layer of soil, and start planting!
Such a stunning backdrop.
Amazing how different shapes, colours and textures can add to the end result.
It doesn't get much prettier than that.
